What a Marketplace Business Is

A marketplace connects two sides: people who have something (products, services, spaces, skills) with people who want it. You handle the transaction and take a percentage. Uber, Airbnb, Etsy, Upwork - all marketplaces.

You don't create the supply. You don't buy inventory. You build the platform and attract both sides. Revenue scales with transaction volume.

Revenue Models

  • Transaction fee (most common): 5-20% of each sale. Etsy takes 6.5%, Airbnb takes 14-16%, Uber takes 25-30%.
  • Subscription: Sellers pay monthly to list. Shopify model. More predictable but harder to attract initial sellers.
  • Featured listings: Sellers pay extra for visibility. Like "sponsored" results on Amazon.
  • Freemium: Free basic listing, paid for premium features (analytics, priority placement, more photos).

Niche Marketplace Ideas (2026)

General marketplaces are impossible to compete with. Niche marketplaces own a specific vertical:

  • Skill-specific freelance marketplaces: "Upwork but only for 3D artists" or "Fiverr for AI prompt engineers"
  • Local service marketplaces: Connect homeowners with specific tradespeople in your city
  • Rental marketplaces: Camera equipment, party supplies, tools, outdoor gear
  • B2B marketplaces: Connect manufacturers with retailers, or agencies with freelancers
  • Education marketplaces: Connect tutors with students in a specific subject (music, coding, languages)

The Chicken-and-Egg Problem

The hardest part of any marketplace: buyers won't come without sellers, sellers won't come without buyers. Solutions that work:

  1. Start with supply: Manually recruit 20-50 sellers before launching to buyers. Offer free listings initially.
  2. Be the first seller: List your own products/services to seed the marketplace.
  3. Single-player value: Give sellers a tool they'd use even without buyers (portfolio page, booking system, invoice tool).
  4. Constrain geographically: Launch in one city/neighborhood. Dominate locally, then expand.

Honest Assessment

Marketplace businesses have the highest failure rate of any business model. The chicken-and-egg problem kills 90% of attempts. But the ones that work become incredibly valuable because of network effects - each new user makes the platform more valuable for everyone else.

Start here only if: you deeply understand a specific market, can access supply (sellers/providers) through your network, and are prepared for 12-18 months of grinding before meaningful revenue.
